In 1989, a 20-acre farm in Meadowview, Virginia was secured for research. In less than a decade, over 8,000 trees were planted. The breeding strategy at the farm is based on a genetic technique called back crossing.

Although this program shows great promise, it still could take 300 years before we can regain our stature in the American forests.
