Growing Up - Leaves

An illustration of 1 simple and 2 compound leaves.

All leaves are called either simple leaves or compound leaves. Simple leaves have only one leaf per stem (my drawing on the left).I'm like the rest of my family: simply a simple leaf. By the way, scientists call the leaf stem the "petiole."

Compound leaves of course have more than one leaflet. Either all their leaflets are attached in alternate or opposite rows along the petiole (my drawing on the right), or they are all attached to the petiole at the same point (see my middle drawing).

Those raised lines you can see on the surface of the leaf are called veins.
